Chicago Fed index shows economy still feeble

Despite other signs of recovery, the Chicago Federal Reserve National Activity Index continues to show the U.S. economy bumping along in a state of near contraction. The reading of minus 0.30 for May improved only slightly from April's minus 0.52. A zero reading would indicate a growth rate near the historical norm.
