Controllable cockroaches may be future key to disaster rescues

Microsoft's motion-sensing Kinect system is part of experiments at North Carolina State University aimed at guiding cockroaches. The researchers envision deploying a team of the connected bugs at disaster sites to explore the situation, eventually guiding them remotely somewhat like earthbound versions of airborne drones. "The autopilot program would control the roaches, sending them on the most efficient routes to provide rescuers with a comprehensive view of the situation," said Alper Bozkurt, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering.
