Senate refuses to extend farm law, urges House to pass bill

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., says the Senate will not extend the 2008 farm law. If House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, "took up the Senate's bipartisan measure, it would easily pass the House with Republican and Democratic votes," Reid said. The House has rejected its version of the farm bill, which would have cut $20 billion from food stamps. The Senate version would trim $4 billion from the program and proposes to save $23 billion. Without an extension, consumers could see the cost of milk double.
