Study: Food-makers divert 95% of food waste from landfills

Food manufacturers generated 44.3 billion pounds of food waste in 2011, according to the Analysis of U.S. Food Waste Among Food Manufacturers, Retailers and Wholesalers, conducted by consultancy BSR. However, donation and recycling prevented 94.6% from going to landfills. Retailers, by comparison, generated 3.8 billion pounds of food waste and diverted 55.6%.
