Caldeira: Unions are trying to redefine franchises

The Service Employees International Union is leading an effort in cities across the U.S. to raise the minimum wage and redefine franchises as large, corporate businesses, rather than the small, often family-owned stores they actually are, IFA President and CEO Steve Caldeira writes. Seattle's new minimum wage law, crafted with the help of advocates such as the SEIU, violates the Equal Protection Clause and the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution because it classifies a small franchise business as a large company due to its affiliation with the corporate brand, he writes.
