Obituary: Education leader accepted no excuses

Rice, 69, a lifelong educator who previously led Maryland, Iowa and Louisiana districts and worked in the Maryland education department, died on June 21 following a lung transplant. Known for his dry humor, Rice was respected for his willingness to make tough and sometimes unpopular decisions.
