Attorney general backs hate crimes bill

Passage of the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which would add to existing law anti-bias protections based on disability, gender and sexual orientation, would give law enforcement officials an important tool to prevent such crimes, Attorney General Eric Holder told the Senate Judiciary Committee. "Hate crimes victimize not only individuals but entire communities," Holder said. "The time is now to provide justice to victims of bias-motivated violence and to redouble our efforts to protect our communities from violence based on bigotry and prejudice."
