The outburst of traffic generated by the sudden death of pop icon Michael Jackson overloaded Twitter's search capacity, leading the microblogging service to disable its search functionality. "This particular news about the passing of such a global icon is the biggest jump in tweets per second since the U.S. presidential election," Company co-founder Biz Stone said. Blog paidContent suggests the stress the news placed on Twitter's system does not "bode well for Twitter's prospects as a 'real-time' search engine."
