In global comparison, U.S. teachers spend the most time on instruction

Elementary-school teachers in the United States spend the most hours per year on instruction -- 1,097 in 2008 -- of the 27 countries for which such data is tracked by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Teachers in New Zealand come in second with 985 hours and in France, teachers spend 926 hours annually on instruction. The average among countries in the OECD is 786 hours.
