Google and eBay execs see bright future for mobile payments

One-third of checkouts at retail stores and restaurants will be upgraded to accept mobile payments using near-field communication technology within a year, Google's Eric Schmidt forecast. Leaders at Google and at eBay-owned PayPal, which books about $10 million daily in mobile payments, predicted a boom in NFC-enabled mobile payments in the coming years. Some industry observers said PayPal still faces challenges in drumming up mobile business for offline goods. Separately, the PCI Security Standards Council listed guidelines on mobile payments.
