Budget issues prompt Energy Dept. to reassess S.C. MOX project

The Energy Department reportedly is considering canceling its mixed-oxide fuel project at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina. The project is about 60% finished, and its estimated costs have recently increased from $4.9 billion to $7.7 billion. The new estimate means the MOX project "may be unaffordable," according to a summary of the Obama administration's budget plan.
