Can Ryanair make money selling $10 U.S. flights?

Ryanair chief Michael O'Leary says he wants to start serving transatlantic routes in the next few years with tickets for as little as $10 apiece. If O'Leary can pull that off, he'll have succeeded where at least four other low-cost airlines have failed. However, long-haul flying typically eliminates many of the strategic advantages enjoyed by no-frills airlines on short-haul routes.
