Coalition for Sugar Reform gains ground

In the most recent House vote, Democrats including Reps. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), Mel Watt (D-N.C.) and others were in favor of sugar reform. And while the American Sugar Alliance says it was outspent by The Coalition for Sugar Reform in lobbying dollars, the coalition said that comparing budgets is comparing apples to oranges. “The folks that lobby for them, they solely focused on protecting the sugar program. Those opposed to the sugar program spend a lot of lobbying dollars on other things,” said Jennifer Cummings, a spokeswoman for the coalition. “It is misleading to suggest that they were outspent... Our strategy has always been a full-court press. We are all consumers at the end of the day.”
