Engineered strands of cells beat like heart tissue

A technique developed by University of Toronto researchers allows stem cell-derived heart cells to function as cardiac tissue, according to a study in the journal Nature Methods. The cells were strung on a silk suture where they were able to connect and respond to an electric stimulus by beating together in preclinical tests. The "biowires" could be used to make cardiac patches.
