Farms look to state-of-the-art machines to solve labor shortages

Growing and picking crops is one area of the food chain that hasn't lent itself very well to mechanization, but increasing farm labor shortages, coupled with efforts at smarter technology, may change all that. Ramsay Highlander has developed a lettuce thinner that combs fields and kills off excess seedlings to make room for healthy heads to grow, and President and CEO Frank Maconachy is now developing a robotic machine to pick the lettuce.
