Hospitals monitor hand-washing to prevent infection spread

Hospitals are keeping a close eye on hand-washing as a way to prevent the spread of infections, and many use the "secret shopper" technique to ensure staffers are washing or sanitizing properly. "Infection control is a key element to ensuring the safety of patients," said Roberta Levy Schwartz, executive vice president of Methodist Hospital in Houston. To this end, Methodist Hospital has strategically installed 4,000 Purell dispensers.
