Laser system probes, identifies dangers at a distance

A laser system with a broadband beam of infrared light that excites the molecules of substances the beam strikes could be used by the military and intelligence agencies to detect dangers at a distance. "For the defense and intelligence communities, this could add a new set of eyes," says Mohammed Islam, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science and biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan.
