NBCT: Give students more time to speak -- and listen

Planning classroom lessons under the Common Core State Standards should include a focus on students' oral skills -- giving students' ample opportunity to speak and listen -- suggests Wendi Pillars, a National Board Certified Teacher in English-language learning. Among her suggestions are to integrate quick activities into the daily routine, such as reiterating classroom instructions to a classmate. In this commentary, she also suggests that teachers prepare questions in advance, plan times for students to interact socially and have students act as "teachers."
