Fed keys in on inflationary expectations

The Federal Reserve is giving heavy emphasis to anticipating whether inflationary expectations are becoming ingrained in consumer behavior. But measuring psychology is hard, and this emphasis puts the Fed at risk of misreading the need for higher interest rates. "Even though it is critically important to monetary policy, expected inflation is poorly measured," JPMorgan economist Michael Feroli said.
