With a rule change, SEC could boost oil reserves

The Securities and Exchange Commission has proposed allowing oil and gas companies to include more information in regulatory filings about their reserve inventories. The rules, if adopted, would increase reserve results by allowing companies to report "probable and possible" reserves and use newer technology to calculate proven reserves. Oil companies have long argued that the reporting rules are based on outdated technology and understate their supply pipelines.
