Tech companies are increasingly using their legal departments to provide results their R&D and sales teams haven't, Lee Gomes writes. That's reversing the technology sector's traditional emphasis on innovation for its own sake, Gomes argues, as companies pour resources not into meaningful R&D but rather into obtaining and enforcing a raft of often "absurdly generic" patents.
