Sugar consumption expected to rise in Africa and Asia

Sugar consumption in Africa is expected to rise annually at a rate of 3.4% by 2020, according to a new report from Rabobank. A 2.9% rise is expected in Asia, and South American consumption should increase 2.1% over the same period. "The Asian region is expected to remain the powerhouse of global sugar consumption and imports, but local production in key countries such as China, Indonesia, Thailand and India is also projected to rise strongly," said Rabobank's Andy Duff.
