Hospitals heed call to ease childhood pain in medical procedures

Hospitals and health care centers are taking a variety of creative steps in answering the American Academy of Pediatrics' plea to help ease childhood pain by creating soothing environments and getting more parents involved. Pediatric anesthesiologists at The Texas Children's Hospital, for instance, have relaxation and distraction techniques including blowing bubbles and letting children ride tricycles to the operating room, and the Pain Center at Akron Children's Hospital in Ohio uses techniques ranging from acupuncture to aromatherapy to soothe children.
