Florida insurance groups ask for higher rates despite state program

Five Florida homeowner insurance groups are asking for a raise in rates after state-mandated cuts. The state recently cut rates by allowing insurers to buy discounted reinsurance from the state Hurricane Catastrophe Fund. William Stander, a regional vice president with the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, said insurance executives told the governor and legislature earlier this year that their property insurance rate reduction plan was unrealistic.
