Restaurant chains debut Big Apple eateries

Restaurant chains including Panera and Freshii's are planning their first forays into Manhattan, spurred by the availability of storefronts left empty by the downturn, The Wall Street Journal reports. Healthy-food chain Freshii's will begin construction this week on the first of 20 New York locations, frozen-yogurt purveyor Menchie's is slated to open on the Upper West Side this summer, and Counter expects to open its Times Square burger joint in the fall.
