Study: Rare antibodies protect mice from deadly dose of flu virus

Scientists at the University of Wisconsin and Theraclone Sciences in Seattle said they identified rare antibodies that proved effective in protecting 60% to 80% of mice from lethal doses of H1N1 and H5N1 flu viruses. The antibodies work by homing in on a part of the virus that does not have many mutations but is present in most influenza strains. They said the findings could pave the way for the development of a universal flu vaccine.
