San Francisco's $1.6B Central Subway project moves ahead

Building a subway tunnel in San Francisco between the South of Market area and Chinatown is expected to cost $1.6 billion. The project took a step forward when a $233.6 million contract to dig the tunnel was awarded to the joint venture of Barnard Impregilo Healy. A pair of new boring machines will be purchased for $36 million and will be used to dig 8,240 feet of tunnel.
