Can sharing passwords help bring paying customers to Netflix, HBO?

Neither HBO nor Netflix seems to be in a hurry to crack down on paying customers sharing passwords with others, perhaps because of the potential for recruiting new subscribers after they have seen the content, Andrew Wallenstein writes. Four in 10 Netflix subscribers and more than a third of HBOGo customers said they had given their passwords to someone else, Ipsos OTX MediaCT found. Meanwhile, just over 4 in 10 of HBO's non-customers and about a third of Netflix's, after viewing the content, said they were interested in subscribing in the next six months.
