Higher-education leaders praise immigration bill

The immigration bill passed on Thursday by the U.S. Senate would give foreign-born graduate students -- particularly those studying science, technology, engineering and math -- more access to green cards and is being praised by some leaders in higher education. "The real game changer in the bill for universities is in the green-card section, where advanced-degree graduates for STEM fields have green cards stapled to their diplomas," said Craig Lindwarm, at the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities. The bill, however, may face an uphill battle in the House.
