U.S. miscalculated Gulf oil spill figures, report finds

The U.S. government miscalculated oil spill figures from BP's Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, according to a report from Martin Blunt, a professor in Imperial College's Department of Earth Science and Engineering hired by BP. Blunt estimates that about 3.26 million barrels of oil seeped from the well, compared with the U.S. government's figure of 4.9 million barrels of oil. BP's Clean Water Act penalties could be reduced by as much as $7 billion with the finding.
