Severe form of syphilis increases among men with AIDS

Health officials say a severe form of the sexually transmitted bacterial disease syphilis has been turning up in HIV-positive gay and bisexual men. The CDC says 49 HIV-positive men in four cities -- Los Angeles, San Diego, Chicago and New York -- were diagnosed with "symptomatic early neurosyphilis" between 2002 and 2004, and while the normal form of syphilis is easily curable in its early stages, this rarer form can lead to blindness and stroke.
