To get the most nutrients from fruits and vegetables, buy the freshest produce from local vendors, chose products in season and shop just a few days ahead of when you plan to serve them, registered dietitian Jane Harrison says. She also says the outer skins of many vegetables are nutrient rich and that steaming is the best way to cook vegetables to ensure maximum nutrition.
