Column: Reducing taxes, fees could help carriers

Taxes and fees comprise up to 46% of the cost of an airline ticket, according to the Air Transport Association. Trimming these taxes and fees would provide huge benefits to the industry, which is facing staggering fuel costs, writes Justin Bachman in BusinessWeek. "So let's say the nation concludes that all these assessments should be reduced for a period in the service of financial relief to a vital public industry. The total fare comes down, and we could funnel money to save the industry," he writes.
