Commentary: What the U.S. can do to halt its economic slide

The American economy is in rough shape and may well get worse, but there are several things the U.S. can do to head off disaster, Lawrence Summers writes. Among his recommendations: Congress immediately should pass the housing bill, which will help with mortgage debt reduction, and policymakers need to honestly assess and address the root causes of the recent commodity price increases.
