GSK urges FDA to tighten regulation of dietary supplements

GlaxoSmithKline has filed a petition asking the FDA to require makers of weight-loss supplements to conduct premarket testing for safety or efficacy and obtain regulatory approval for their products. If approved, the proposed changes could help Glaxo fend off competition for over-the-counter Alli but would also "make it illegal to market dietary supplements for weight loss," said Michael McGuffin, president of the American Herbal Products Association.
