1st-quarter loss brings layoffs at Hovensa refinery

Hovensa laid off 270 contract workers Friday at its Virgin Islands refinery, a spokesman reported Monday. "We experienced a significant net operating loss in the first quarter," said spokesman Alex Moorhead. About 1,000 contract workers remain at the facility, which is jointly owned by Hess and Petroleos de Venezuela.
