Shop-local campaigns spur sales

Small businesses have stayed afloat because of the efforts of campaigns to shop local. The Institute for Local Self-Reliance predicts that there are about 100 groups that promote merchants and reports that independent retailers in cities with such campaigns saw holiday sales drop 3.2% from the previous year, compared with 5.6% in cities without them. While the short-term perks are obvious, the long-term effects of such campaigns are unclear.
