Reports: Lautenberg to chair key Homeland Security panel

The death of Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., has opened a vacancy at the head of the powerful Homeland Security Appropriations subcommittee that controls funds for the Department of Homeland Security. According to media reports, Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., will assume the chairmanship. Lautenberg has been openly critical of DHS funding formulas and security gaffes at U.S. airports.
