Changes to Florida teacher tenure go into effect Friday

Florida teachers starting their careers or switching districts will no longer receive tenure under a new law that goes into effect Friday, and those teachers will now work under one-year contracts. Another new initiative under the law will base half of teachers' evaluations on student test scores. The evaluation system will be used to establish merit-pay plans by July 2014, although current teachers will be able to opt out of merit pay.
