Restaurant sales and operator optimism fell in May

Same-store sales at about 40% of restaurants declined in May compared with the same month last year, and optimism among restaurant operators fell for the first time in six months, according to the National Restaurant Association's monthly index. Only one-quarter of operators said they expect conditions to improve in the next six months, and 21% said they expect things to get worse.
