Anchor cable severed on R520 bridge in Wash., repairs underway

A 550-foot steel cable that anchors Washington state's floating State Route 520 bridge to the floor of Lake Washington was found severed last week, and the state Department of Transportation is investigating the matter. The damage may have been caused by a construction vessel colliding with the cable since the area is restricted except for construction vessels, according to WSDOT officials. Repairs to the broken cable will be done by Kiewit/General/Manson, the contractor for a new replacement bridge.
