Apple's deal with foundry cements a lingering breakup with Samsung

Apple has committed to having Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing make some of the chips for its mobile devices, but it won't completely break off its supplier relationship with Samsung Electronics. Randy Abrams of Credit Suisse estimates that Apple will direct 30% of its chipmaking orders to TSMC in early 2014. Apple also has filed an application in Japan to trademark the "iWatch" name and potentially faces competition from Samsung in the wearable-computer segment.
