Data-protection pact between U.S., EU close to passage

The U.S. plans to extend the same data-privacy protection to Europeans for data transmitted to U.S. law enforcement authorities that it offers to U.S. citizens. The accord is part of an agreement the U.S. and the EU are negotiating for the prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of criminal offenses. The EU is still concerned about limiting the use and processing of data on European citizens to specified law enforcement purposes.
