Discovery moves researchers closer to "universal vaccines"

While searching for a vaccine to protect newborns from infections, Chiron researchers developed a new gene-searching technique dubbed "multiple genome screen" that could expedite development of vaccines for other diseases. The findings could lead to "universal vaccines" capable of warding off multiple strains of diseases, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
