Michigan districts cut deeply into school budgets

Detroit's school board voted Monday to slash nearly $522 million from its budget, laying off 818 teachers and 900 other employees but avoiding an operational shutdown. Other Michigan districts are shortening sports seasons, cutting music and reading programs and eliminating some bus routes.
