Congress shows support for Obama's heavy-lift launch vehicle

In a June 22 letter to President Barack Obama, a bipartisan group of 62 House members called for the immediate development of a heavy-lift launch vehicle that could be used for lunar or deep-space exploration in conjunction with the Orion crew exploration vehicle. But there is growing division among lawmakers who appear ready to compromise with the White House over the ending of the Constellation program that has been funding Orion and those who are lobbying to keep the space shuttle flying beyond its proposed retirement date early next year.
