Senate panel approves Obama's nominee for USDA food safety chief

The Senate Agriculture Committee cleared President Barack Obama's nomination of Dr. Elisabeth Hagen as chief of the Food Safety and Inspection Service, a unit of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Hagen, who is currently chief medical officer of the USDA, said she intends to "build strong, science-based, public health policy" if appointed as food safety chief.
