Witness: Spare straps might have prevented crane collapse

The 2008 crane collapse that killed seven people in New York has been blamed on worn safety straps known as "slings," but workers had been issued brand-new straps shortly before the disaster, a witness told investigators this week. The new straps were left unused in a shed, and riggers continued working with the old, frayed straps, the inquiry heard.
