Altair Semiconductor has raised $25 million in private funding from investors to continue development of chipsets for 4G Long-Term Evolution smartphones. The chip company won't include support for 3G wireless networks in those chipsets, betting on widening demand for 4G LTE handsets, Jeffrey Burt writes. Verizon Wireless reported in January that nearly half of its data traffic goes through 4G networks and that 23% of its customers had a 4G smartphone at the end of 2012.
