Group issues guidelines for using ear tubes in children

Children who get frequent ear infections and who have fluid buildup should be considered candidates for ear tubes, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation's guidelines released on Monday. However, the guidelines, which cover children ages 6 months to 12 years, recommend against tubes for children who have frequent ear infections but no fluid buildup.
